IV Sedation

IV Sedation

Fairport, Pittsford and Rochester, NY

Many people experience fear or a great deal of anxiety at the thoughts of going to the dentist. In these cases, they may even avoid going to the dentist entirely, which may result in extensive repairs later on. Maybe you do not mind going to the dentist for routine dental work, but become apprehensive for longer, more involved procedures. If either of these sounds familiar, IV sedation in Pittsford at Pittsford Dental Excellence Center may be an option for you.

Pittsford Dental Excellence Center is excited to offer IV sedation by Mobile Anesthesiologist of New York with Dr. Stefan Lucas, MD.

What is IV sedation?

IV sedation uses safe and effective medication that is delivered directly to a vein in your arm to help you remain relaxed in a semi-awake state throughout your procedure.

Benefits of IV Sedation

A major benefit of IV sedation is that the medication can be adjusted to suit your specific needs, making it completely safe for most healthy individuals. It is likely that although you may be able to communicate with your dental care team, you will have little to no memory of the procedure. IV sedation is ideal for extensive procedures such as implant surgery, wisdom teeth removal, and lengthy cosmetic dental procedures.

Additional Benefits of IV Sedation:

  • Offers a deeper state of sedation in comparison to oral sedatives or nitrous oxide.
  • Works fast since medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream.
  • Ideal for cases of severe anxiety toward going to the dentist.
  • Typically results in little to no memory of the procedure.
  • Helps to reduce gag reflex.
  • Remain conscious, and avoid risks of complications associated with general anesthesia.

Am I a candidate for IV sedation?

When you visit your Pittsford dentist, Dr. Sam Guarnieri, the first step for IV sedation is to determine if you are a candidate. During your consultation your entire health history will be reviewed, as well as your oral health, to determine if you are healthy enough to receive this form of sedation dentistry.

It is imperative that you list in your medical history any and all medications, supplements, or herbs that you take as some of these could interfere with the sedation medication.

Medical conditions that may preclude you from receiving IV sedation include but are not limited to:

  • Pregnancy
  • Allergy to Benzodiazepines
  • Central Nervous System depression
  • Glaucoma (in some cases)

What should I expect with IV sedation?

Since the effects of the sedation may linger for several hours or more following your procedure, you should plan on having someone drive you to and from your appointment. Also, plan on taking the remainder of the day off from work or your normal activities.

Receiving IV sedation is as simple as giving a blood sample. If you are worried about discomfort from the insertion of the IV, our IV sedation mobile care team can administer a numbing cream to help make the process more comfortable for you.

Once the IV is inserted into your vein, the medication is delivered, and you will begin to feel the relaxing effects fairly quickly. We can begin your procedure as soon as your mouth is numb and the sedation takes effect. You will remain awake but feel a deep sense of relaxation.

Following the procedure

Afterward, it is recommended that you go home and rest. Have a family member or trusted individual sit with you for the rest of the day until you feel alert. Consume only light foods and liquids at first. If any nausea occurs, you can sip on a soda or ginger infused beverage such as tea or ginger ale to help settle your stomach. Be sure to avoid alcohol for the day, and take any prescribed medications as directed by your dentist, Dr. Guarnieri.
