Fairport, Pittsford and Rochester, NY
I realize this headline is cheesy, but I couldn’t resist because now more than ever practitioners of every flavour are becoming more astute to the importance of good sleep and the value of addressing sleep apnea—even dentists! So, when I say your future depends on your dreams—it does!
Let’s start with some insight on sleep apnea. Bale and Doneen, authors of my favourite book Beat the Heart Attack Gene, offer the following: “Frequent loud snoring may trumpet obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a dangerous disorder that can trigger a stroke or heart attack. Bouts of interrupted or irregular breathing during sleep cause blood pressure to spike, damaging arteries over time.”
If that’s not enough to keep you awake at night, I don’t know what is! That’s why at Pittsford Dental Excellence Center our concern for each patient is more than just for your teeth. We look for health risk factors that are not traditionally the purview of dentists. For example:
1. We look at the shape of the palate.
2. We examine the condition of the tonsils.
3. We take a Panorex (x-ray) of the nasal passages to determine if there’s narrowing.
4. We examine the condition of the tongue.
5. We check the shape of the arch of the teeth.
Now, I admit I am a little obsessive about risk factors. However, I believe you cannot be too careful, too thorough or too proactive. As I’ve written about in other posts, the relationship between risk factors and cardiovascular issues is too important to gloss over it. In future posts, I will be providing additional insight.
What you can do now. In the meantime, if your partner complains that your snoring keeps them up then you need to let us know the next time you are in the office. There may be some underlying issues that need addressing and no dentist is a mind reader. I am, as I am sure you know, committed to helping my patients achieve and maintain maximum health and the only dumb question is the unasked question. Talk to me…
