One of the most valuable diagnostic tools that we use is our digital X-ray technology.

Enjoy the digital difference

Digital X-ray sensors reduce radiation exposure by approximately five-fold compared to conventional X-ray machines, which use ionizing radiation.

Not only is the radiation exposure significantly less, but digital sensors also produce better, clearer imaging solutions. These superior images also minimize the total number of X-rays each patient must have, and, as a result, further limits the amount of radiation exposure.

Pittsford Smiles Dental has four major types of digital X-rays:

  1. Cephalometric (CRPH) – Takes a complete image of one side of the face. Most commonly used in orthodontics as it shows the teeth, jawbone and soft tissues, which helps develop a total treatment plan.
  2. Panoramic (PAN) – Optimum for patients with strong gag reflexes or small mouths, because no bitewing or other film is inserted into the mouth. It detects any potential abnormalities in the development of the teeth, jaws, sinuses and jaw joints. Also commonly taken following any facial injury.
  3. Bitewing (BWX) – Used for cavity detection; views areas between teeth that cannot be observed with the naked eye.
  4. Periapical (PA) – A detailed view of the entire structure of as many as three teeth that are next to one another. Shows the crowns, roots and supporting bone structure. Allows a view of the developing permanent teeth in pediatric patients.
